LEEK Cricket Club have become the first winners of the new Chris Harper Memorial Trophy, awarded by The Sentinel newspaper.

The honour, formerly known as the Editor's Award, has been renamed in recognition of the hugely- respected Sentinel sports reporter, who died, aged 71, in February, following a long illness.

Leek proved themselves worthy winners by clinching a back-to-back championships in the North Staffordshire & South Cheshire League Premier Division last year.

It was the first time Leek had achieved the distinction in the club's history.
