JASON Burgess (Staffordshire Moorlands) produced a remarkable performance in the X-runner event at Osmaston, near Ashbourne, at the weekend, coming home third out of 1,500 finishers.
The tough 10k course involved a number of strength-sapping challenges.
The race was part of Burgess' preparations for the World Mud Run Championships in the US city of Savannah, Georgia, in June, where – together with four other Moorlands athletes – he will be representing Great Britain.
Moorlands AC coach Dave Owen said: "Jason is no spring chicken, at nearly 38 years old, but an intense training schedule for three months leading into this race, and his own 'do or die' attitude, saw him battle it out with the leaders from the off.
"Jason should be very proud of his third place against quality opposition.
"It must be said that the winner was in a class of his own, being a renowned winner of prestigious Mud Run events all over the world."
