You’ve probably heard of Meow Chat this week after it suddenly increased in popularity, despite being around for a while.

This surge might be due to the mass invites through Facebook after the relaunch encouraged users to invite their friends which prompted many complaints across social sites such as Twitter, but it looks like this chat app is set to be the next big thing.

What is Meow Chat?

It’s an instant messaging app that allows you to text friends and send pictures as well as allowing you to talk to complete strangers. It seems like a cross between many other apps such as Chatroulette, What’s App and Tinder.

How does it work?

Use it to chat to your current contacts or friends as you would via text or Facebook Messenger. To start a ‘Random Chat’, just click on the big orange cat at the bottom of the screen. This new feature, which was included as part of the relaunch, puts you in a chat room full of people and from there you can choose to private chat someone if you’d like.

You can also use the ‘Explore’ feature to find out what other nearby are up to and see their pictures which you can interact with. As well as using your location, Meow Chat can match you with others via your hobbies and interests once you’ve filled in these details on your profile, suggesting people you might be compatible with.

Is Meow Chat for me?

The app describes itself as a "fun way to chat and meet new friends" but because it can be used as a dating app or even for casual encounters by some, it’s not suitable for children. Plus the likelihood of coming across images of selfies that include chest and ab shots is high.
